Reclaiming Your Power: A Coaching Session Deep Dive on Boundaries, Self-Care, and Saying "No"

Have you ever felt like you're pouring from an empty cup, constantly giving to others until there's nothing left for yourself? Do you find yourself saying "yes" when your heart screams "no," silencing your own needs to please those around you? If this resonates, then this message is for you.

Today, I want to take you behind the scenes of a recent coaching session. While I must respect confidentiality and omit names, the insights we uncovered together are universal, speaking to the heart of every woman who has ever struggled to put herself first in a world that demands so much.

The Story of A:

A remarkable woman, let's call her A, came to me after a deeply challenging experience in her workplace. False accusations, betrayal by colleagues, and a system that seemed designed to silence her voice – she had been through a tough time. A was understandably hurting, frustrated, and uncertain about how to move forward.

Our session was a journey of exploration, delving into the layers of A's experience to uncover the core beliefs and patterns that had led her to this point. Here are some of the key themes we explored:

1. The Power of Boundaries:

A, like many of us, had fallen into the trap of being "too nice," blurring the lines between healthy connection and unhealthy intrusion. She realised that she had allowed others to cross boundaries, leaving her feeling vulnerable, disrespected, and ultimately, betrayed.

We explored the crucial importance of setting clear boundaries – both at work and in our personal lives. This means:

  • Knowing your limits: Understanding what you're comfortable with and what you're not.

  • Communicating your needs clearly and assertively: Saying "no" without guilt or apology when necessary.

  • Enforcing those boundaries: Taking action to protect your physical, emotional, and mental space.

Setting boundaries isn't about being selfish or unkind; it's about honouring yourself and your needs. It's about creating healthy relationships where everyone feels respected and valued.

2. Self-Care is Not Selfish:

A, like so many women, was used to putting everyone else's needs before her own. She had internalised the message that prioritising herself was somehow wrong or selfish.

We challenged this deeply ingrained belief, exploring the profound difference between selfishness and selflessness. True self-care, we discovered, is not about indulging in short-lived pleasures; it's about nourishing your mind, body, and spirit so that you can show up fully in the world. It's about filling your own cup first, so you have something to give to others.

Think of it this way: you can't pour from an empty cup. When we neglect our own needs, we become depleted, resentful, and ultimately, unable to give our best to those we love.

3. The Wisdom of Your Body:

In our fast-paced world, it's easy to lose touch with the wisdom of our bodies. We ignore the subtle cues, the whispers of intuition, the gut feelings that try to guide us.

A learned to pay closer attention to her physical and emotional responses when making decisions. She discovered that a true "yes" feels expansive and joyful, originating from a place of deep alignment with her core self. A forced "yes," on the other hand, feels heavy, draining, and often accompanied by a knot in the stomach or a sense of unease.

By tuning into her body's signals, A gained a powerful tool for navigating life's choices with greater clarity and confidence.

4. Finding Your Voice:

For many women, speaking up for themselves can feel incredibly challenging. Years of conditioning may have taught us to be agreeable, to avoid conflict, to put others' needs before our own.

A practiced using new language, replacing automatic "yeses" with phrases like:

  • "I need time to think about it."

  • "Can I get back to you on that?"

  • "I'm not comfortable with that."

These seemingly small shifts in language can have a profound impact, empowering you to take control of your choices and communicate your needs with clarity and confidence.

A's Journey Continues:

A left our session with a renewed sense of hope and determination. She committed to:

  • Reflecting on her past experiences: Identifying patterns of neglecting her own needs and allowing others to cross her boundaries.

  • Practicing setting clear boundaries: Communicating her needs assertively and taking action to protect her well-being.

  • Prioritising self-care: Nourishing her mind, body, and spirit through practices like meditation, tapping, and deep breathing.

  • Developing her intuition: Learning to trust her gut feelings and make decisions that align with her true self.

A's journey is a reminder that we all have the power to reclaim our lives, to set healthy boundaries, and to prioritise our own well-being. It's a process of self-discovery, growth, and ultimately, empowerment.
